The Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center has been reserved for Saturday, September 29, 2007 for the next retreat conference. It will be held 8:00 am to 5:00 pm in the November Lodge with lunch in the Lipscomb Dining Hall.Dear Fellow EHHS Doctoral Students,Below you will find a “call for proposals” for the 2007 EHHS Doctoral Retreat and Forum scheduled for Saturday, September 29th. Proposals are due Sept 10th, and all EHHS doctoral students (in any phase of the program) are eligible to apply. Weencourage new doctoral students to come share ideas, participate in discussions, or simply come to learn from more “seasoned” doctoral students. We also hope doctoral students who are near the end of their program will come to mentor the newer doctoral students. The purpose of the EHHS Doctoral Retreat and Forum is a casual venue to meet other KSU doctoral students in EHHS, as well as share research, ideas, have collegial discussions, and form a doctoral community. We are also in the end stages of forming an EHHS Doctoral Forum Group on campus and will be a registered organization as of hopefully this fall. This group will have a $50 membership fee, which will include refreshments for all monthly meetings as well as cover your registration fee at the Doctoral Forum and Retreat. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Maria Shaheen at mshahee1@kent.eduSincerely,Maria Shaheen, Shane’ Williams, Mandy Capel, Paul Wendel, Anita Levine and Diane Craig(Doctoral Forum Planning Committee)
“The Scholar’s Journey: Intersections, Adversities and Encounters Along the Way”Second Annual EHHS Doctoral Forum and RetreatCuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center (CVEEC)September 29, 2007
This year’s theme reflects the journeys we all travel as scholars. Each scholar travels a different path, and yet her/his path often intersects with those of others along the way. Each time paths cross, each person is influenced in some way by the other (the encounter may likely change each person’s thinking, even if in the smallest way). Each person’s life journey is different, and there are countless paths to travel and unlimited tales to tell. Our journeys have led us to our research interests, our epistemological and ontological beliefs, and our uniqueness as scholars.Proposals are currently being accepted for the 2007 EHHS Doctoral Student Retreat and Forum on September 29, 2007 at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center (CVEEC). All doctoral students in EHHS are welcome to submit proposals to present at this forum. The presentation formats are as follows: roundtables, sessions (1hour), alternative format sessions (multimedia, arts-based, participatory, outdoor-based, etc.). Proposals are due no later than Monday, September 10, 2007, and submission guidelines for each of the presentation formats are listed below. Presenters will be notified no later than September 21st. Please note that presenters will still be required to pay the conference entrance fee.Roundtables: The purpose of the roundtable is to share ideas, papers “in progress”, research, and so forth with a small group of interested colleagues. If you intend to share a paper “in progress”, we ask that you submit the paper to the EHHS Doctoral Forum & Retreat Planning Committee no later than September 14, 2007 at mshahee1@kent.edu. For ideas and current research, please submit a short abstract (no longer than 200-300 words) highlighting what will be shared in your session. Also include a 50-100 word description to put into the program, along with your name, phone number, email address, current degree area and focus, and year in the program.Sessions (1 hour): Sessions are intended to be participatory in some way. Presenters can share research, pose theoretical questions, stage debates, and so forth; however, there should be a large element of audience participation involved in the session. To submit a proposal for sessions, please include an abstract briefly describing your topic (no longer than 300-500 words), relevant literature (include citations), and describe how the audience will participate in your session. Describe in a separate paragraph how your personal journey led to your current research interests, and also include a 50-100 word description to put into the program, along with your name, phone number, email address, current degree area and focus, and year in the program. Submit to mshahee1@kent.edu.Alternative Format Sessions: To allow for varying types of presentations, the “alternative format” sessions encourage creative presentation methods such as interactive multimedia sessions, outdoor-based presentations, arts-based session, musical presentations, and so forth. To submit a proposal for an alternative format session, please include a brief abstract (no longer than 300-500 words) describing your presentation. Describe in a separate paragraph how your personal journey led to your current research interests, and also include a 50-100 word description to put into the program. Also include your name, phone number, email address, current degree area and focus, and year in the program. Submit to mshahee1@kent.edu.Conference registration information will be sent out in a few weeks.Note: Members of the EHHS Doctoral Forum Group will have free conference registration (the annual $50 membership fee covers all meetings, including the yearly conference). To join the EHHS Doctoral Forum Group, a registered student organization on Kent State’s main campus, please email mshahee1@kent.edu for more details. We look forward to reading your proposals.Sincerely,Maria Shaheen, Diane Craig, Shane’ Williams,Mandy Capel, Anita Levine & Paul Wendel(Conference Planning Committee Members)

congrats!!
Thank you, Joanne. We had a very productive meeting, and as you can see our Blog page is up and running. All that were able to attend commented on the success of the retreat in fall 2006, and we are excited to offer another experience in September.
This is welcome information. I look forward to not feeling like an orphan in my department and more importantly to sharing with my peers.
Welcome, Lennise. Please feel free to join us online and at the retreat. Our plans include monthy meetings/forums and several study groups to be formed. For students new to doctoral work, study groups for statistics have been successful. A few years ago a few students began a John Dewey study group after studying about John Dewey in Residency I. Lets take this to the Discussion Forum.
What is planned for the retreat?
Ruth,
We will be having a doctoral student picnic this summer and will be planning some of the sessions for the fall retreat. We will have a theme this year (“Walking the Middle Ground”) and will have a panel of speakers. Other than that, we typically open it up for doctoral students to come and share their ideas, research, and so forth. What would you like to see? We will post the date for the picnic as soon as we confirm a date and place:)
Feel free to email Diane or myself with any questions!
We should be able to post an agenda for the retreat very soon. See the info above for date, times, and location. Consider submitting a proposal to tell of your doctoral journey, and to present your research. As you can see there are some options for presenting.
Just to give you an overview of what transpired at the last retreat, we held registration and refreshments from 8:00 – 9:00 am. Welcome, introductions, poetry and sharing of research from 9:00 – 9:30 am. Paul Wendel presented on “Doctoral Survival”, and a book sharing session on theory literature that we found helpful. At 11:00 am, faculty arrived for a panel discussion about their doctoral journeys and their research. The faculty joined us for lunch and further discussions. After lunch, the faculty panel continued with questions from the students. After the faculty left, Paul and Wendy Tietz gave an EndNotes presentation. Very helpful. In the late afternoon, there were breakout sessions and 4 doc students presented their research. We gathered as a whole group again at 4:00 pm for a discussion for the future.
As you can see by the “Call for proposals for this year’s retreat, we are planning more time for sharing of research. This will give doc sudents more opportuniites to share their work with others. Faculty are invited again to participate in discussions, and share their doctoral journeys and research with us.
Hope this helps with a preliminary agenda for the doc retreat. See you there.
Thank you for the invitation to this dynamic, prolific group! I look forward to participating & presenting. Peace be with you always. Namaste,
